There's a strong mineral streak of slate and stone on the nose of this bottling, as dark cherry and sandalwood aromas complete the picture. The palate is tense and complex, pairing strawberry, wild thyme and white pepper flavors. Drink now-2040. — Matt Kettmann

      90 Points, Vinous

The 2023 Pinot Noir Tondre Grapefield is particularly expressive on the nose. Sweet berry fruit and spice tones meet a core of enlivening acids and ripe, pliant tannins...the 2023 is an easygoing, enjoyable quaff. - Billy Norris, July 2025

Tondré Alarid established a vineyard on his family’s historic ranch in Monterey’s Santa Lucia Highlands. In the hands of his son Joe Alarid, the estate has become one of the S.L.H.’s best known properties. Literally next door to famed Garys’ Vineyard, Tondre shares the same well-drained hillside soils and crop-limiting afternoon fog and cool winds from nearby Monterey Bay. The combination of a perfect site and meticulous farming makes for truly great Pinot Noir.

Our yearly Santa Cruz Mountains release of Pinot Noir under our “Appellation Series” has been one of our superstars since its inception. We sourced the fruit in 2023 from the Muns family’s highly-regarded vineyard in the Loma Prieta district of the SCM. Located literally on the San Andreas Fault on a ridge at 2,600 feet of elevation, the property is planted to the three main “Dijon” Pinot Noir clones on primarily clay loam and sandstone soils. It is a unique site that supplies exceptional Pinot Noir fruit.

The 2023 Pinot Noir Rancho La Vina has some savory nuance, thanks to the signatures of the state and the inclusion of 5% stems. Cracked black pepper, sage and leather build layers beneath the tart, crunchy pomegranate fruit. Well-balanced and interesting. - Billy Norris, July 2025

Our sixth vintage from the Santa Rita Hills AVA spotlights a new Pinot Noir vineyard source for us: Rancho La Viña. Over the last two decades, the region has become one of California’s most influential Pinot Noir growing districts. Located in Santa Barbara County, the Sta. Rita Hills is part of the larger Santa Ynez Valley AVA. The hills of the district run east to west, which allows cool ocean breezes from the nearby Pacific Ocean to enter the valley, providing fairly cool microclimates – perfect for growing top-flight Pinot. Dense morning fog gives way to sunny afternoons, and loamy soils make Rancho La Viña and incredible cool climate growing site. In addition to 34.5 acres of top-quality Pinot Noir wine grapes, a variety of other crops are also grown on the ranch, which includes 126 acres of the best walnuts in California. We are excited to have been invited to work with this small, quality grower that really takes pride in their work – and feel that this vintage is a truly excellent wine.

      91 Points, Wine Enthusiast

The 2022 Sarah’s Vineyard Grenache comes from Sarah’s estate and is generally used exclusively in our Madonne Rhone blend. This is the first time since 2016 that we have released a Grenache, and we are really excited about it. We hand-harvested and destemmed the whole Grenache berries directly into the fermenter. We “cold soaked” until the onset of a robust, native fermentation before inoculating with commercial yeast. Punch downs of the cap were done by hand, three times a day. One hundred percent secondary malolactic fermentation was induced. Aged 18 months in neutral French oak barrels. All these careful techniques have the aim of maintaining the superb fruit and spice aromas and flavors.

      2024 Viognier Estate

The 2024 Sarah’s Vineyard Viognier is based on this noble varietal from France’s Northern Rhone. Despite a surge in its popularity in California in the 1990’s, there is still relatively little Viognier planted in the state. We currently have about an acre of Viognier planted in Block B2 of our Dwarf Oak home vineyard at Sarah’s. For the ’24 release, hand-harvested and whole cluster pressed the Viognier fruit. Fermentation began in neutral French oak barrels. After the barrel fermentation, the wine was matured sur lie in neutral barrels for six months.

The 2021 Sarah’s Vineyard Syrah is based on this noble variety of France’s Northern Rhone, responsible worldwide for classic reds. From French Hermitage to Australian Shiraz, Syrah is one of the most popular and widely-planted red wine grapes.

The Syrah for our 2021 release came from our good friend George Besson, Jr.’s old vineyard, just 300 yards to the east of Sarah’s. This historic property was originally planted in 1922. George’s and our estates bridge the historic Santa Clara Valley and the cooler climate “Mt. Madonna” district of the southern Santa Cruz Mountains. Here fog and winds from nearby Monterey Bay dramatically cool down the vineyards, extending the growing season and providing unique conditions for complex Rhone cultivars.

Nebbiolo is prized for its elegance and ageability in the Piedmont region of Italy. However, in America, it has been difficult to find a place for it to grow well. Presented to you is our first vintage with our young vines.Traditionally, young vines are fresh, fruity, and light, but lack the grace, pronounced flavors, and structure of old vines. That is what you see here, a fresh, fruity, moderately structured, and fun to drink wine. 2022 Charbono

91 Points & Hidden Gem, Wine Enthusiast

Charbono was originally introduced to California in the Napa Valley by early Italian immigrants; the grape itself hails from France’s Savoie region. There is now very little acreage left in the state of this once widely planted variety, which accounts for its almost legendary cult status. We started making Charbono in 2007, buying from our friends who had an acre of it planted just down the road near Santa Teresa and Hecker Pass. That land was sold to build houses on, and we planted an acre of it on our estate. While our little estate Charbono was developing, we bought some from Pear Valley Vineyard in the Paso Robles area, where the bold heat gets Charbono very ripe and lighter in color. Beginning with the 2018 vintage, our Charbono is entirely estate grown and sees 18 months in 10% new French oak barrels.

We are so excited to announce our very first Estate Pinot Noir Nouveau bottling! This is a special, very limited release (only 63 cases produced) of our 2024 Pinot Noir Nouveau. We are so excited to share this with you - just in time for your holiday table!

This is our play on the traditional Beaujolais Nouveau, released the third Thursday in November in France as a celebration of the year's harvest. Presented to you is our first vintage with our estate Pinot Noir. Traditionally, this winemaking style produces fresh, fruity, ready to drink wines; this is a vibrant, fruity, moderately structured, and fun to drink wine bursting with notes of orange zest, grapefruit, pomegranate, cherry, cranberry, strawberry, and spice; the perfect addition to your holiday table or a gathering of friends.

"When I was young, the holidays were a time of gathering for my family. A time when we silently agreed that togetherness was a priority. As I’ve gotten older and my family has spread across the US and beyond, we have still carried that feeling of togetherness into the holidays. Nouveau wine is made for these occasions. It is fun, attractive, bright, and versatile. It was made to bring people together."
